Francine is a shepherd. He tends his cattle along the side of the N2, where he lives in a makeshift farm settlement.
“Francine was one of the first stories I photographed. His environment is almost surreal, along the side of the highway. It feels like the heart of rural South Africa, but you climb a hill and suddenly the city stretches out in front of you. It‘s a paradox, summed up perfectly
by the ingenious kraals which he constructs for his herd from tyres found along the road; living in
accordance with his traditional roots with the materials available in an urban environment.
A Rubber Soul.”
